How to complete The Restorer

Restoration is rescuing something headed for the trash (a wobbly chair, a rusted tool, a dead lamp) and bringing it back to working, good-looking condition. Unlike buying new, you preserve the original and learn how the thing was actually built.

1. Choose a candidate worth saving: solid wood furniture, a metal tool, or simple electronics beat particleboard or anything badly cracked.
2. Assess what's actually wrong (structure, finish, rust, wiring) and decide what to repair versus replace before touching it.
3. Clean thoroughly first; grime often hides that the underlying piece is in better shape than it looked.
4. Make structural repairs (re-glue loose joints, rewire a lamp, sand and treat rust) before any cosmetic work.
5. Refinish appropriately: strip and re-oil or repaint wood, polish or seal metal, then reassemble and test it works.

Tips

• Photograph it before and during disassembly so you know how it goes back together.
• Don't over-sand or strip valuable patina; sometimes cleaning and waxing beats refinishing.
• Rewiring anything electrical means replacing the cord and plug to current safety standards, not just patching.

The item is fully functional and looks restored, and you can show its rough before-state against the finished result.
