The Green Thumb
35 pointshobbies & creativity
Grow a vegetable from seed to harvest and eat what you grew.
How to complete The Green Thumb
This is the full loop most people never close: a dry seed becomes food on your plate through nothing but your daily attention. Beyond the novelty, it recalibrates how you think about food, patience, and delayed reward, and it costs almost nothing to try.
- Pick a fast, forgiving crop: radishes (about 30 days), lettuce, or bush beans; cherry tomatoes if you have real sun and more patience.
- Get seeds, a pot at least 20 cm deep with drainage holes, and potting mix; a sunny windowsill or balcony is enough.
- Sow 2-3 seeds at the depth printed on the packet, water gently, and keep the soil moist but never soggy.
- Once seedlings appear, thin to the strongest one and give it your sunniest spot, 6+ hours of light for anything that fruits.
- Water when the top couple of centimeters of soil feel dry, and feed diluted liquid fertilizer every two weeks once true leaves show.
- Harvest at eating size and cook or eat it the same day.
Tips
- Radishes are the classic first win: four weeks from seed to salad and hard to ruin.
- Overwatering kills more first plants than drought; poke the soil before you reach for the can.
- Write the sowing date on the pot so you know when harvest should arrive.
- Buying a seedling skips the point; it has to start as a seed you planted.
What counts as done
You ate something that began as a seed you sowed yourself, ideally with a photo of the harvest before it disappeared.
