Carver

Use manual carving or whittling tools to shape a raw wooden object into a new form.

How to complete Carver

Carving turns a shapeless offcut into something you made with hand tools and patience. It's a slow, tactile skill where you remove wood you don't want until the form appears, and a first spoon, animal, or chain link teaches grain reading better than any video.

  1. Start with a soft, even wood like basswood, lime, or a green branch of willow or birch.
  2. Get one sharp carving knife and a thumb guard or cut-resistant glove; dull blades cause most injuries.
  3. Draw your shape on the blank and rough it out with stop cuts before refining.
  4. Always carve with the grain and away from your body; switch direction when the wood starts tearing.
  5. Sand or leave tool facets, then finish with food-safe oil if it'll be handled.

Tips

  • Green (fresh) wood cuts far easier than dried lumber for a first project.
  • Strop the blade every 20 minutes; sharp steel needs less force and slips less.
  • Carve small, controlled paring cuts rather than big chunks.

What counts as done

A raw piece of wood is now a recognizable carved object you shaped by hand.
