Game Master

Host and run a full tabletop RPG session as the Game Master.

How to complete Game Master

GMing is a different hobby from playing: you prepare the scenario, voice every character the players meet, referee the rules, and keep several people entertained for hours, all at once. Running your first full session is the tabletop equivalent of going from passenger to pilot, and most people discover they were more ready than they thought.

  1. Pick a system with a published starter adventure; the D&D 5e Starter Set or a one-page game like Honey Heist keeps prep small.
  2. Run a published one-shot rather than homebrew; the module handles the plotting so you can focus on running the table.
  3. Read the adventure twice and write a one-page cheat sheet: key scenes, NPC names, monster stats, and the likely ending.
  4. Recruit three to five players and lock in a date with a three-to-four-hour block; scheduling is genuinely the hardest boss.
  5. Open with a quick rules intro and expectations chat, then run the session start to finish, improvising when players go sideways.

Tips

  • When players do something unexpected, say yes and adapt; the module is a suggestion, not a script.
  • Make a fast rules call and move on; look up the correct rule after the session, not during it.
  • Prep situations, not plots; you cannot predict what players will do, only what the world contains.
  • End on time, with either a resolution or a cliffhanger.

What counts as done
