How to complete The Novelist

Fifty thousand words is the line where a project stops being a sketch and becomes a real book-length draft with arc, momentum, and a middle to defend. Crossing it proves you can sustain a single story past the point where most people quit.

1. Pick a finishable scope: one protagonist, one central want, one ending you can already picture.
2. Set a daily word quota you can hit on a bad day (e.g. 1,000) and protect a fixed writing slot for it.
3. Draft forward only; leave bracketed notes like [fix name] instead of stopping to research or polish.
4. Track your running total in a sheet so the number, not your mood, tells you whether you're on pace.
5. Push through the saggy middle by raising the stakes or forcing a decision rather than adding subplots.
6. Write a real ending, then stop and call the draft done before you start re-editing chapter one.

• NaNoWriMo math works: 1,667 words a day clears 50k in a month.
• Banish the inner editor in draft one; revision is a separate skill for later.
• Keep a one-line-per-chapter outline so you always know what scene comes next.
