How to complete The Improviser

Standing up to do original stand-up or live improv is one of the most exposed things a performer can do: no script to hide behind and silence is instant feedback. Doing it once breaks the fear that keeps most people in the audience forever.

1. Write five minutes of original material, or learn a few basic improv games if you're going the improv route
2. Run the set out loud repeatedly, timing it and cutting anything that drags
3. Book a spot at an open mic; most comedy clubs hold them weekly and let beginners sign up free
4. Test the material on one or two honest friends before the real thing
5. Get on stage, commit fully to the bit even if a joke dies, and finish your time

Tips

• Hold the mic close and speak slower than feels natural; nerves make you rush
• A joke landing flat is normal and survivable; pausing and moving on reads as confidence
• Record your set on your phone to hear what actually worked versus what you assumed
