How to complete The Global Scribe

This is learning the foundational strokes and tools of a calligraphic tradition outside your own writing system: Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Devanagari, and so on. Beyond pretty letters, you absorb how a script's rhythm, pressure, and stroke order shape its whole aesthetic.

1. Pick one script and its standard style (e.g. Chinese kaishu regular script, Arabic Naskh, Japanese kana) so you have a clear model to copy.
2. Get the correct instrument (a pointed or flat brush, a qalam reed pen, or the right nib) plus suitable ink and paper.
3. Drill the basic strokes in the traditional order before attempting whole characters; stroke sequence is the foundation, not a detail.
4. Copy a beginner sheet of core characters or letterforms repeatedly, comparing each attempt to the model.
5. Write one short complete word, name, or phrase cleanly as your first real piece.

Tips

• Stroke direction and order are rules, not preferences: getting them wrong shows in the final shape.
• Practice posture and how you hold the tool; in most of these traditions the whole arm moves, not just the fingers.
• Trace over printed models early on to train muscle memory before going freehand.

What counts as done

You can produce a recognizable, correctly-stroked word or short phrase in your chosen script without copying it letter by letter from a guide.
