Sequential Artist

Design, write, and illustrate an original comic strip featuring recurring characters.

How to complete Sequential Artist

This is creating an original comic strip (your own characters, your own writing, your own art) where the same cast returns across panels or installments. It pushes you to combine storytelling, page layout, and drawing into something that actually reads as a sequence, not just standalone pictures.

  1. Design two or three recurring characters with distinct silhouettes and consistent visual features you can redraw reliably.
  2. Write a short script with a clear setup and payoff, breaking it into panels with the dialogue and action noted for each.
  3. Thumbnail the layout small first to plan panel sizes, flow, and where the eye should land.
  4. Pencil, ink, and letter the strip, keeping characters on-model from panel to panel.
  5. Add tone or color if you want, then read the finished strip cold to check the joke or beat lands.

Tips

  • Keep panel counts low at first: a tight four-panel strip teaches pacing faster than a sprawling page.
  • Make a quick character model sheet so faces and proportions stay consistent across panels.
  • Leave generous room for lettering; cramped or overflowing text is the most common rookie mistake.

What counts as done

You have a finished, readable comic strip with at least one recurring character that tells a complete beat from first panel to last.
