Published Author

Write a work of fiction or creative non-fiction that is officially published for an audience.

How to complete Published Author

This is the leap from writing for yourself to putting words in front of strangers who chose to read them. Whether through a publisher, a magazine, or your own imprint, it means a finished piece now exists as a real, findable publication.

  1. Polish one complete piece to its best honest version, then have at least one other person read it cold.
  2. Choose a lane: submit to literary magazines or agents, or self-publish via a platform like KDP or a small press.
  3. Format to the target's exact specs (word count, manuscript layout, blurb, cover) before submitting or uploading.
  4. Send it out and log every submission; for traditional routes, expect rejections and keep the piece circulating.
  5. Once accepted or live, confirm it has a public listing or issue a reader can actually buy or access.

Tips

  • Never pay a fee to a 'publisher' that should be paying you; vanity-press deals don't count as the goal.
  • A free ISBN and a real cover make self-published work look legitimate to readers and reviewers.
  • Track submissions in a spreadsheet so you don't double-submit or miss a response window.

What counts as done

Your work has a public, shareable listing or printed appearance that a reader could find and access without you handing it to them.
