How to complete Maestro

Composing means producing an original piece that actually holds together (melody, harmony, and structure) that someone could perform or that exists as a finished recording. It's the leap from playing other people's music to authoring your own.

1. Start small: write a one- to two-minute piece with a clear melody before attempting anything orchestral.
2. Pick your tool: notation software like the free MuseScore or Dorico, or a DAW if you sketch by ear.
3. Build a chord progression and a theme, then develop it through variation instead of just repeating it.
4. Arrange for specific instruments, respecting their real ranges and how the parts sit together.
5. Export a score, a playback mockup, or a recording so the piece exists outside your head.

• Constraints help you finish, so limit yourself to a few instruments and one key.
• Steal structure, not notes: analyze a piece you love and borrow its form.
