How to complete Glass Manipulator

Shaping glass, whether melting it at the torch, fusing it in a kiln, or grinding and assembling cold pieces, demands respect for a material that goes from rigid to liquid and back fast. Completing one piece proves you can control heat or breakage well enough to get a clean result.

1. Choose your method by access: lampworking needs a torch and mandrels, fused glass needs a kiln, stained glass needs a glass cutter and soldering iron, no furnace required for the cold methods.
2. Take a beginner class or studio session first; molten glass and kilns carry real burn and thermal-shock risk.
3. For a first piece, make something small, a fused glass coaster, a lampwork bead, or a small stained-glass suncatcher.
4. Cut, shape, or melt your glass to the design, keeping heat even to avoid cracks and stress.
5. Anneal kiln and torch work by cooling slowly per the glass's schedule so internal stress doesn't shatter it later.

Tips

• Always wear didymium glasses at the torch to protect your eyes from sodium flare.
• Mixing incompatible glass (different COE) causes cracks; stick to one tested type.
• Stained glass is the safest entry point if you can't access a flame or kiln.
