How to complete Gingerbread Architect

You're going from flat dough to a freestanding, fully edible house that holds its own shape. The real challenge is structural: getting walls that don't slump and a roof that doesn't slide, then decorating without it all collapsing.

1. Bake the panels from a stiff, low-spread gingerbread recipe and cut them while warm using a paper template
2. Let baked pieces dry overnight so they're rigid before you assemble
3. Make royal icing as your glue and pipe it thick along every seam
4. Assemble walls first, brace them with cans or glasses, and let that base set hard before adding the roof
5. Decorate only after the structure is fully dry and load-bearing

Tips

• Royal icing is the secret, not melted sugar caramel which burns fingers and sets too fast to adjust
• Keep a bit of extra icing in a sealed bag so it doesn't crust over mid-build
• If a wall keeps sliding, your icing is too thin or the panel edges aren't square

A complete house stands unsupported on its own, with walls and roof joined, and all of it is edible.
