How to complete Fiber Artisan

Going from a ball of yarn to a wearable garment means sustaining tension, reading a pattern, and shaping fabric over thousands of stitches. Finishing a full piece, not just a swatch, is the leap from dabbling to actually making clothes.

1. Pick one craft and a simple first garment: a knit or crochet hat, cowl, or basic top with minimal shaping.
2. Match yarn weight and hook or needle size to the pattern, and buy enough from one dye lot to finish.
3. Knit or crochet a gauge swatch and measure it; if stitches per inch don't match the pattern, change needle/hook size.
4. Work the pattern in sections, using stitch markers to track increases, decreases, and row counts.
5. Block the finished piece, wet or steam it to even out stitches, then weave in all loose ends with a tapestry needle.

Tips

• Gauge is not optional for garments; skipping the swatch is how sweaters come out too big or small.
• Count your stitches at the end of each row early on to catch dropped or added stitches.
• A top-down seamless pattern lets you try the garment on as you go.
