Earth Shaper

Create a functional or decorative object using a pottery wheel or hand-built clay techniques.

How to complete Earth Shaper

Working clay into a finished object means seeing a piece through every stage, from wet forming to a fired result you can hold. Whether you throw on a wheel or build by hand, the milestone is a piece that survives drying and firing without cracking apart.

  1. Choose your method: hand-building with coils or slabs, or throwing on a wheel
  2. Wedge the clay first to remove air bubbles that cause explosions in the kiln
  3. Form your shape, keeping walls an even thickness so it dries and fires evenly
  4. Let it dry slowly and fully to the leather-hard then bone-dry stage before firing
  5. Bisque fire, then glaze and fire again, or use the studio's firing schedule

Tips

  • Even wall thickness matters more than fancy shape; thick-thin pieces crack
  • Don't rush drying, fast drying near heat is the main cause of cracks
  • A local studio or community kiln solves the firing step if you lack a kiln

What counts as done

You have a fired clay object that held together through drying and the kiln.
