Audio Alchemist

Record and produce a high-quality cover or remix of an existing musical work.

How to complete Audio Alchemist

This is about taking a song that already exists and making it sound like yours through a deliberate recording and mixing process, not just humming over a backing track. The payoff is a finished, listenable piece you can share, plus real hands-on experience with arrangement, tracking, and mix balance.

  1. Pick a song whose vocal range or instrument parts you can actually play or sing comfortably, then decide your angle: faithful cover, stripped-back acoustic, or a tempo/genre flip for the remix.
  2. Find a clean instrumental or stems (remix packs, karaoke versions, or rebuild the chords yourself) and lock everything to a steady tempo grid.
  3. Record each part on its own track in a free DAW like Reaper, GarageBand, or Cakewalk, doing multiple takes and keeping the best.
  4. Edit timing and pitch, then mix: set levels, pan instruments apart, EQ out mud, and add light compression and reverb.
  5. Bounce a master at a sensible loudness, then A/B it against the original on headphones and phone speakers to catch problems.

Tips

  • Record in the quietest room with soft furnishings to kill echo; a duvet behind the mic helps more than expensive gear.
  • Reference the original constantly but don't try to match it exactly, because your value is the interpretation.
  • For a remix, check whether you can legally share it; many artists allow it only on non-monetized platforms like SoundCloud.

What counts as done

You have a mixed, exported audio file of your cover or remix that plays start to finish and sounds clean on multiple devices.
