How to complete Apiarist

Keeping bees is a full season of stewardship: installing a colony, reading the hive, fighting off pests, and timing the harvest so you take surplus without starving them. The reward is jars of honey from a colony you personally kept alive.

1. Check local rules and register your hives where required, then choose a sunny, sheltered spot.
2. Buy a starter setup (Langstroth hive, suit, smoker, hive tool) and order a nucleus or package of bees for spring.
3. Inspect every 7-10 days for the queen, brood pattern, food stores, and early signs of swarming.
4. Monitor and treat for varroa mites; untreated colonies routinely die over winter.
5. Harvest only capped, surplus honey in late summer, leaving the bees enough stores.

Tips

• Take a local beekeeping course or join a mentor club before your bees arrive.
• Skip the harvest in year one if stores are low, since keeping the colony alive comes first.
• Use light smoke and slow movements; rushing an inspection is how you get stung.

You harvested and jarred honey from a hive you actively managed through a season.
