How to complete World Knowledge: Europe

Europe's borders, grudges, and alliances only make sense once you know the history behind them. Picking five countries and actually learning their defining events turns headlines, travel, and even wine labels into things you can read. It is also one of the fastest ways to sound genuinely informed in conversation without faking it.

1. Choose five countries from different corners of the continent — say Spain, Poland, Greece, Sweden, and Ireland — so you cover more than the usual France-Germany-UK triangle.
2. For each country, learn its founding or unification story, one major turning point like a revolution or lost war, and one figure who shaped it.
3. Use one focused source per country: the history section of its Wikipedia article, a single podcast episode, or a chapter from a general European history book.
4. Write a fact card per country with five entries — dates, names, and why each event mattered.
5. Test yourself a few days later: explain each country's story out loud for two minutes without looking at the cards.

Tips

• Avoid ending up with five sets of WWII facts — reach back to medieval or early modern events for at least some countries.
• Anchor facts to something you care about: football rivalries, food, or a trip you are planning make dates stick.
• A spaced-repetition app like Anki turns the fact cards into long-term memory with a few minutes a day.
