How to complete The Graduate

A degree is less about any single class and more about finishing a multi-year project with hundreds of small deadlines, which is why it signals persistence as much as knowledge. For most people it is the longest sustained commitment they have completed by their twenties.

1. Choose a program you can stay interested in for years; switching majors costs time, but switching beats quitting.
2. Sort out funding early through scholarships, grants, loans, or part-time work so money problems do not decide the outcome.
3. Treat it like a job: show up, use office hours, and build a study group; those relationships carry you through the worst semesters.
4. Audit your own credit requirements every year instead of trusting that someone else is tracking them.
5. Complete the final exams or thesis, file the graduation application (often a separate form with a deadline), and collect the degree.

• Most dropouts happen in the first year; surviving year one is most of the battle.
• The registrar's degree audit is the source of truth, not your assumptions about requirements.
• If you abandoned a program years ago, ask about transferring old credits; you may be closer than you think.
