Local History

Study the history of the place where you live.

How to complete Local History

Studying where you live means learning who was here before you, why the streets and buildings ended up the way they are, and what shaped your town's character. It turns a familiar commute into a layered place and gives you stories most neighbors don't know.

  1. Start with the basics: founding date, original inhabitants or Indigenous nations, and why people first settled here.
  2. Visit your local library's or historical society's archive; many keep old maps, photos, and newspapers not online.
  3. Walk your own neighborhood reading historical plaques, building cornerstones, and street-name origins.
  4. Trace one specific thread that interests you, such as an old industry, a notable resident, or how a landmark was built.
  5. Talk to a long-time local or a librarian who can point you to the stories records leave out.

Tips

  • Compare an old map to a current one to see what was demolished, renamed, or rerouted.
  • Local Facebook history groups and museum websites are surprisingly rich starting points.
  • Verify oral stories against a written source before repeating them as fact.

What counts as done

You can explain your town's origin and recount at least a few specific local history facts or stories you didn't know before.
