Up in the Air

Take a hot air balloon flight.

How to complete Up in the Air

A balloon flight is the slowest, quietest form of aviation there is: you drift with the wind at walking speed, hundreds of meters up, and the only sound is the occasional burner blast. It is less about adrenaline and more about seeing familiar landscape from a perspective almost nobody gets.

  1. Search for licensed balloon operators within driving distance, or plan it into a trip to a famous ballooning region like Cappadocia, Albuquerque, or the Loire Valley.
  2. Book a sunrise slot; morning air is calmest and flights are least likely to be scrapped.
  3. Keep your schedule flexible around the date, since operators cancel for wind and rain and you may need the backup morning.
  4. Dress in layers with closed shoes and skip the sandals; landing fields are often dewy farmland.
  5. Follow the crew's landing brief: knees bent, holding the rope handles, facing away from the direction of travel.

Tips

  • Ask how many passengers share the basket. Eight or fewer means better views and photos than a sixteen-person basket.
  • It is warmer aloft than you expect because you move with the wind; the cold part is standing around at the 5 a.m. inflation.
  • If you are afraid of heights, balloons are the gentlest test: no motion sickness, no falling sensation.

What counts as done

You lifted off, flew, and landed in a hot air balloon as a passenger, typically capped by the traditional post-flight toast.
