Hot Springs

Bathe in natural hot springs.

How to complete Hot Springs

Soaking in water heated by the earth itself is a bucket-list classic for a reason: geothermal springs exist in a limited set of places, and reaching one usually means a small adventure. The mineral-rich heat is genuinely relaxing for muscles, and wild springs often sit in spectacular landscapes.

  1. Search for natural springs within reach; look for both developed spring resorts and free wild pools, which sites like local hiking forums list with directions.
  2. Check recent reports on water temperature and access, since wild springs can shift from pleasant to scalding seasonally.
  3. Pack a towel, water shoes, drinking water, and a dry change of clothes; for hike-in springs add a headlamp.
  4. Test the water gradually with a hand and foot before getting in, entering at the cooler edge of the pool.
  5. Soak in 15 to 20 minute stretches, cooling off and drinking water between rounds.

Tips

  • Keep your head above water in wild springs; warm freshwater can carry microbes you do not want in your nose.
  • Skip alcohol before and during soaking, as heat plus dehydration causes fainting.
  • Go at sunrise or on a weekday to have a popular spring to yourself.
  • Remove silver jewelry first, since sulfur water tarnishes it fast.
