First Camp

Pitch a tent and sleep in it overnight.

How to complete First Camp

Sleeping outside for the first time rewires how you think about comfort: you realize how little you actually need for a good night. This is the gateway achievement for everything else outdoors, and doing it once removes most of the anxiety that keeps people from trying.

  1. Borrow or rent a tent, sleeping bag, and sleeping pad before buying anything; gear libraries and outdoor shops rent full kits cheaply.
  2. Pitch the tent once in a yard or park beforehand so you are not learning pole assembly in the dark.
  3. Book a drive-in campground within an hour of home for your first night, so bailing out is always an option.
  4. Arrive at least two hours before sunset, pitch on flat ground, and stake out the rain fly even if the forecast is clear.
  5. Eat, watch it get dark, and go to bed earlier than usual; nights outdoors start early.
  6. Stay in the tent until morning, then make a hot drink before packing up.

Tips

  • The sleeping pad matters more than the bag; cold ground steals heat faster than cold air.
  • Bring earplugs, because unfamiliar night sounds are the top reason first-timers sleep badly.
  • Keep all food sealed in your car or a bin, not in the tent.
  • Check the overnight low, not the daytime temperature, when choosing what to bring.

What counts as done

You woke up inside a tent you pitched yourself after spending the whole night in it.
