How to complete Safari

Seeing an elephant or lion move through land it owns, unfenced and indifferent to you, resets your sense of scale in a way no zoo can. A safari takes real planning and budget, which is exactly why it is one of the highest-point travel achievements: most people talk about it for years and never book it.

1. Pick a region: East Africa for the great migration, southern Africa for self-drive parks like Kruger, or closer options like Yala in Sri Lanka or bison reserves if a flight to Africa is out of reach.
2. Time it for the dry season, when animals cluster around waterholes and grass is low.
3. Decide between a guided package and a self-drive park; self-driving Kruger or Etosha can cost a fraction of a lodge safari.
4. Book six months or more ahead for peak season, and sort visas and any required vaccinations early.
5. Pack binoculars, a camera with zoom, and neutral-colored clothing.
6. Take the dawn game drives even though they hurt; early morning is when predators are active.

Tips

• A good guide will find ten times what you would spot alone, so prioritize guide quality over lodge luxury.
• Ask your doctor about malaria prophylaxis for the specific park, not the country.
• Manage expectations: sightings are luck, and slow hours are part of the experience.
