How to complete UNESCO Heritage Scout

UNESCO World Heritage sites are places judged to hold outstanding value for all of humanity, from Machu Picchu to an entire historic city center. Visiting one puts you in front of a globally protected piece of nature or culture, with over 1,200 to pick from.

1. Browse the official UNESCO list and pick an inscribed site near your route.
2. Confirm it's actually inscribed, not merely on the "tentative" list.
3. Check opening hours, timed-entry tickets, and visitor caps before you go.
4. Read up on why the site matters so you know what you're looking at.

Tips

• Popular sites enforce daily caps, so book entry slots well in advance.
• Arrive at opening or late afternoon to dodge the tour-bus crowds.
• Take a guide or the official audio tour; on-site signage is often thin.
