Stringing together five different transport modes in one day turns a city into a puzzle and forces you to read it the way locals do. It's a travel-day game best played somewhere with a dense, varied network. The variety of vehicles matters more than the distance covered.

1. Pick a city known for transport variety: think ferries, funiculars, cable cars, trams, metros, and tuk-tuks
2. Map a loose loop the night before that naturally chains modes together rather than backtracking
3. Buy a day pass or stored-value card to avoid fumbling for fare on each leg
4. Keep a running tally and deliberately slot in the unusual modes (cable car, ferry, funicular) early before you run out of daylight
5. Photograph each vehicle or keep tickets as you go to track your five

Tips

• Funiculars, gondolas, and heritage trams each count as their own mode and are easy wins in hilly or waterfront cities
• Walking and ride-hailing don't count as public transport, so keep to shared scheduled or hired-shared vehicles
• Check first/last departure times for ferries and cable cars; they stop earlier than buses
