The Silent Vow

Attend a formal silent retreat or complete 48 hours of total silence at home.

How to complete The Silent Vow

Sustained silence (no talking, reading, phone, or media) pulls your attention off external input and onto the inner chatter you usually drown out. At a structured retreat or alone at home, 48 hours is long enough to move past restlessness into genuine stillness.

  1. Choose your format: a guided silent retreat (Vipassana, monastic, or wellness) or a self-run 48-hour silence at home.
  2. Tell anyone who might contact you that you'll be unreachable, and set an auto-reply.
  3. Remove inputs, not just speech: no phone, social media, books, or shows, since real silence includes what the mind takes in.
  4. Prepare simple meals and a loose plan (walks, sitting, rest) so you're not deciding things while hungry.
  5. When boredom peaks on the first evening, sit with it instead of breaking the silence.

Tips

  • A retreat's structure and group accountability make it far easier than going solo your first time.
  • Keep pen and paper for thoughts so you can stay silent without losing what surfaces.
  • Warn housemates well ahead; their cooperation makes or breaks an at-home attempt.

What counts as done
