How to complete Shadow Work
Everyone has one pattern that keeps reappearing: people-pleasing, self-sabotage before deadlines, picking the same fight. Shadow work means looking directly at that pattern instead of around it, and finding out what it protects. The structure requirement matters because a single journaling burst produces insight that evaporates; five-plus sessions produce change.
- Name one recurring pattern in a single sentence, with two or three recent examples of it costing you something.
- Pick your container: a therapist, a structured workbook (IFS, CBT, or schema-based ones work well), or a reputable self-inquiry course.
- Commit to at least five sessions or chapters focused on that one pattern, and put them in your calendar before you start.
- Between sessions, log moments the pattern fires: trigger, feeling, what you did. Two lines each is enough.
- At the end, write down what the pattern was protecting you from and one specific behavior you will do differently.
Tips
- Resist widening the scope: one pattern examined deeply beats five patterns skimmed.
- Wanting to quit around session two or three is common and usually means you are close to something real.
- If solo workbook material stirs up more than you can settle on your own, switch to a professional: that is not failure, it is the point of the exercise.
What counts as done
You finished the five sessions or the full workbook and can explain in your own words where the pattern comes from and what your replacement behavior is.
