How to complete The 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding

This sensory technique pulls you out of a spiraling panic or anxiety spike by forcing your attention onto the present through your five senses. It works because you can't be fully lost in a thought loop while actively cataloguing what's around you.

  1. When the panic hits, plant your feet and slow your breathing before you start.
  2. Name 5 things you can see, say them out loud or in your head, specifically: 'blue mug, scratched table.'
  3. Name 4 things you can feel, the chair against your back, your socks, the air temperature.
  4. Name 3 things you can hear, then 2 things you can smell, then 1 thing you can taste.
  5. Repeat the cycle if you're still escalating; there's no rule that one pass is enough.

Tips

  • Go slow and be specific; rushing through it defeats the purpose of anchoring your attention.
  • Touch is the most grounding sense, so press your feet into the floor or hold something textured if the others are hard.
  • Practice it once when you're calm so the steps are automatic when you actually need them.

What counts as done

You used the full sequence during a real anxiety or panic moment and felt your activation drop, even slightly.
