Gratitude List

Write down 25 things you are genuinely grateful for in one sitting.

How to complete Gratitude List

The first ten items come easily — family, health, coffee. The exercise starts working when you push past them, because items eleven through twenty-five force you to notice specific, unglamorous things you genuinely rely on. That specificity, not the counting, is what research links to measurable mood improvement.

  1. Block 20-30 minutes with your phone in another room and open a notebook or blank document.
  2. Dump the obvious ones first without judging them — they warm you up.
  3. When you stall, rotate through categories: people, your body, past luck, daily comforts, hard things that taught you something, and stuff you would only miss if it vanished.
  4. Make each item specific — the way a friend texted to check on you Tuesday beats a generic entry like friends.
  5. Do not stop before 25, even if the last five take longer than the first twenty.
  6. Date the list and read it back once, slowly.

Tips

  • If you are stuck, use subtraction: imagine losing something ordinary — hot water, your eyesight, your commute podcast — and see what surfaces.
  • The same thing reworded twice counts as one item; each entry should point at a distinct thing.
  • Keep the list somewhere findable — rereading it on a rough day is half its value.

What counts as done

A dated list of 25 distinct, specific items exists, written in one continuous sitting rather than collected over days.
