How to complete The Rhetoric Master

Ethos, pathos, and logos are the three levers every persuasive speaker pulls, and learning to spot them in real time makes you far harder to manipulate. Doing this with a famous speech turns an abstract rhetoric lesson into something you can actually point at, line by line.

1. Pick a speech with a full transcript available (King's 'I Have a Dream', JFK's inaugural, etc.)
2. Read or watch it once straight through for the overall argument
3. Find one ethos moment: where the speaker establishes credibility or shared values
4. Find one pathos moment: a line built to stir emotion through imagery or stakes
5. Find one logos moment: an appeal to facts, logic, or cause-and-effect reasoning

Tips

• A single sentence can carry two appeals at once; note which dominates
• Pathos often hides in metaphor and repetition, not just sad stories
• Watching the delivery, not just reading, makes ethos and pathos much clearer

What counts as done

You can quote a specific line from the speech for each of the three appeals and explain why it fits.
