The Ocean Crossing

Successfully cross an entire ocean via air or sea.

How to complete The Ocean Crossing

Crossing a full ocean, not just a sea, is a milestone of scale: thousands of miles of open water between two continents. Whether you fly it in hours or sail it over days, it's the trip that genuinely connects two distant parts of the world under your own travel.

  1. Pick an ocean and two continents it separates: Atlantic (Europe to the Americas), Pacific (Asia to the Americas), or Indian (Africa to Asia/Australia)
  2. Decide air or sea; flying is fast and cheap, while a transatlantic cruise or repositioning sailing is the slow, immersive route
  3. Book a route that clearly spans the open ocean rather than hugging a coastline or crossing a narrow sea
  4. For sea crossings, plan for several days at sea and pack for boredom, seasickness, and limited connectivity

Tips

  • Repositioning cruises (when ships relocate seasonally) are often the cheapest way to cross by sea
  • On long flights, pick a window seat and hydrate; eastbound crossings hit harder with jet lag
  • A short hop over the Mediterranean or English Channel does not count, you need the open ocean

What counts as done

You traveled coast to coast across a full ocean by plane or ship, with the itinerary or boarding pass showing the transoceanic route.
