The Kinship Scribe
20 pointssocializing & friendship
Send a physical, handwritten letter to someone who isn't expecting one.
How to complete The Kinship Scribe
Handwritten mail is now rare enough that receiving it registers as an event: people keep letters in drawers for decades in a way no text thread survives. Because it arrives unprompted by any birthday or occasion, an unexpected letter says 'I thought of you for no reason,' which is exactly what makes it land. Total cost: about thirty minutes and a stamp.
- Choose someone who would never expect it: a grandparent, an old teacher, the friend who moved away, someone who once helped you and never heard back.
- Get real supplies: decent paper, an envelope, a stamp. No printing; the imperfect handwriting is the point.
- Write one page. Open with why they came to mind, tell one specific shared memory, say plainly what they've meant to you, close with a little news from your own life.
- Address the envelope, stamp it, and drop it in a mailbox the same day, before the urge to polish turns into never sending it.
Tips
- Draft on scrap paper first if crossed-out words bother you, though a slightly messy final copy reads as more human, not less.
- Specific beats sentimental: 'the night we got lost in Lisbon' outlasts 'you're a great friend' every time.
- Don't announce it's coming; the surprise is half the gift.
- Missing their address? Ask a mutual contact, since asking the recipient blows the surprise.
What counts as done
The letter is postmarked and out of your hands, usually confirmed a week later by a delighted, slightly confused message from the recipient.
