The Volunteer
25 pointssocializing & friendship
Complete a volunteer shift for any charity or community organization.
How to complete The Volunteer
A first shift mostly exists to break the seal: the signing up, the showing up, the discovery that organizations will happily put an untrained stranger to useful work for three hours. Most people who 'mean to volunteer someday' are stuck before step one, so one completed shift already puts you past the majority — and tells you whether you want shift number two.
- Find a one-off, beginner-friendly opening: food bank sorting, park or beach cleanup, animal shelter, library book sale, race-day marshaling. Check VolunteerMatch or your city's volunteer portal, or just email an organization directly.
- Pick a date within the next two weeks — volunteer intentions decay fast past that.
- Complete whatever signup they require; for most one-off shifts it's a web form and a five-minute briefing on arrival.
- Show up ten minutes early in clothes that can get dirty, keep your phone in your pocket, and do whatever is asked — the unglamorous tasks are the actual need.
- Before leaving, thank the coordinator and ask what ongoing help looks like, even if you haven't decided anything yet.
Tips
- Food banks and cleanups are the classic zero-experience entry points: no interview, no training, immediately useful.
- Recruit a friend to come along — it halves the odds of a no-show.
- Ask questions freely on site; coordinators run on first-timers and fully expect them.
What counts as done
One full shift worked start to finish for a real organization — you were on their roster, not just passing by to help.
