The Toast
35 pointssocializing & friendship
Deliver a toast or speech at a wedding, birthday, or anniversary.
How to complete The Toast
The toast is one of the last rituals where an ordinary person formally addresses a room, and a good two-minute one gets retold at that family's gatherings for years. It's also the most forgiving public-speaking venue in existence: the audience is warm, slightly tipsy, holding drinks, and actively rooting for you to succeed. That makes it the ideal place to break the fear.
- Say yes to the next opening — or volunteer to the host of an upcoming wedding, milestone birthday, or anniversary. Toast slots often sit unfilled until someone offers.
- Build it on one story: a specific moment involving the honoree, what that moment reveals about who they are, and a wish for what's ahead. That three-beat shape carries nearly every great toast.
- Write it out in full, then cut to under three minutes — roughly 300 spoken words.
- Rehearse out loud five times with a timer. Actually out loud; your mouth needs the reps your head can't give it.
- On the day: cue card in your pocket, stand where everyone can see you, speak slower than feels natural, look at the honoree, and land the ending cleanly — 'To Anna!' — glass raised.
Tips
- One good story beats five compliments strung together.
- Cut any inside joke that fewer than half the room will get.
- Stay near sober until you've delivered; the drinks-first toast is a famous failure mode.
- Blackout plan: if you lose your place, jump straight to the final line and raise the glass. Nobody will ever know.
What counts as done
You stood up, spoke, and the room raised glasses on your cue — the achievement is delivering it, not delivering it flawlessly.
