The Introduction

Successfully initiate a conversation and form a genuine new connection with a stranger.

How to complete The Introduction

This goes past a transactional exchange to actually clicking with a stranger, the moment small talk turns into a real back-and-forth you both want to continue. It's the core skill behind every friendship you don't already have, and it gets easier the moment you stop waiting for the perfect opening.

  1. Pick a low-pressure setting where lingering conversation is normal: a class, a meetup, a line, a hobby group
  2. Open with an honest observation or question about the shared situation rather than a canned line
  3. Ask a follow-up that goes one layer past their answer to show you're actually listening
  4. Offer something about yourself so it becomes a two-way exchange, not an interview
  5. If it's flowing, close the loop: swap contacts or suggest crossing paths again

Tips

  • Open-ended questions ('what got you into this?') keep talk alive where yes/no questions kill it
  • Silence isn't failure; a short pause often pulls the other person into carrying their share
  • Recurring places beat one-off encounters because you can pick the conversation back up later

What counts as done

You started a conversation with a stranger that became a genuine connection, ideally ending with a way to reach each other again.
