The Expat

Officially move and establish legal residency in a country different from your birth.

How to complete The Expat

Becoming an expat means crossing from visiting a country to legally belonging there, with a residency permit that lets you stay long-term rather than on a tourist clock. It is a paperwork achievement as much as an adventure one: the milestone is the official status, not the flight over.

  1. Choose a residency pathway that fits you: work visa, digital nomad visa, student permit, investment or retirement visa, or ancestry
  2. Gather the documents these almost always require: proof of income or funds, clean background check, and health insurance, often apostilled and translated
  3. Apply through the consulate or in-country immigration office, paying close attention to deadlines and biometric appointments
  4. Register your local address and get a tax or national ID number once approved
  5. Open a local bank account and set up healthcare to actually establish your life there

Tips

  • Start document collection months early; apostilles and certified translations are the usual bottleneck
  • An immigration lawyer or relocation agent often pays for itself by preventing a rejected application
  • Keep certified copies of every submission, since renewals will ask for the same papers again

What counts as done

You hold a valid residency permit or visa that legally authorizes you to live in a country other than your birth country.
