The Elemental Scholar

Memorize the first 20 elements of the periodic table and their symbols.

How to complete The Elemental Scholar

This is recalling hydrogen through calcium in order, paired with each symbol, fast and without prompts. It's a compact, satisfying win that makes chemistry class, the news, and lab labels suddenly readable.

  1. Write out elements 1-20 in order with symbols: H, He, Li, Be, B, C, N, O, F, Ne, Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, Ar, K, Ca.
  2. Chunk them into groups of five and learn one chunk per session rather than all twenty at once.
  3. Make a mnemonic sentence where each word's start matches a symbol to lock in the tricky ones (Na, Mg, Si).
  4. Quiz yourself blank-to-symbol and symbol-to-name, shuffling the order so you aren't just reciting a song.
  5. Review the full list once a day for three days to move it into long-term memory.

Tips

  • The non-obvious symbols are sodium (Na) and potassium (K) from their Latin names; drill those extra.
  • Reciting out loud while walking beats silent re-reading for retention.
  • Cover the symbols and reproduce the whole table on a blank sheet as a final check.

What counts as done

You can write all 20 elements and their symbols in order from memory, twice in a row, with zero errors.
