The Beacon

Visit a coastal lighthouse and climb to the gallery level if accessible.

How to complete The Beacon

Lighthouses are among the few historic working structures you can still climb, and the gallery walkway just below the lamp gives an unobstructed view of the coastline that the ground never offers. This is a quick, memorable outing rather than a major expedition.

  1. Find a coastal lighthouse near you or your travel route that allows visitors inside
  2. Check opening hours and climbing access in advance; many open seasonally or only on certain days
  3. Visit and climb the internal stairs to the top
  4. Step out onto the gallery balcony if it's open and walk the perimeter
  5. Look up at the lens or lamp room while you're there

Tips

  • Tower climbs often have height or age restrictions and steep ladders; wear proper shoes
  • Wind at the gallery is much stronger than at sea level, so secure hats and phones
  • Time it near sunset for the best light, but confirm last-entry time first

What counts as done

You climbed the lighthouse and stood on its gallery level (or reached the top if the gallery was closed).
