The Back-Roads

Explore a small, off-the-beaten-path town or mountain village.

How to complete The Back-Roads

Skipping the famous stops and spending real time in a place tourists drive past. The point is seeing how people actually live somewhere that doesn't perform for visitors, which usually means better food, real conversations, and no entry queues.

  1. Pick a town or village an hour or two off the main tourist corridor, ideally one with no Wikipedia 'things to do' list
  2. Arrive by local bus or rented car rather than a tour, and plan to stay at least half a day
  3. Skip any itinerary; walk the main street, sit in the one cafe everyone uses, and talk to whoever serves you
  4. Ask a local where they eat or what's worth seeing nearby, then actually go

Tips

  • Go where the road signs stop being bilingual; that's usually the edge of the tourist zone
  • Carry small cash since rural spots rarely take cards
  • Learn five words of the local language; it changes how people treat you

What counts as done

You spent meaningful time in a place with no major tourist infrastructure and can name something specific you learned or ate there.
