The Art of Doing Nothing

Sit on a chair or lie on the grass for 20 minutes without a 'goal', just existing.

How to complete The Art of Doing Nothing

This is deliberate idleness without a screen, a task, or a productivity hack hiding inside it. The point is to let your nervous system idle in real time, which is harder than it sounds because the urge to reach for your phone or 'optimize' the moment kicks in fast.

  1. Pick a spot where you won't feel watched or obligated, like a bedroom chair, a balcony, or a patch of grass in a park.
  2. Leave your phone in another room or face-down out of arm's reach, with no timer you keep glancing at.
  3. Set a quiet 20-minute alarm, then sit or lie down and let your eyes go soft or closed.
  4. When your mind reaches for a task or your hand reaches for your pocket, notice it and stay put instead of acting on it.

Tips

  • Boredom and restlessness usually peak around the 5-7 minute mark, then ease off if you ride it out.
  • Doing this outdoors gives your eyes and ears something to settle on without you having to 'do' anything.
  • If lying still makes you anxious, try it sitting upright first.

What counts as done

You stayed in one place for the full 20 minutes without checking your phone or turning it into a chore.
