An archive holds primary sources, the original letters, records, photographs, and documents that historians actually build from, rather than the digested version in books. Visiting one, physical or digital, means doing a slice of genuine research instead of just reading conclusions.

2. Find a relevant archive: national or state archives, a university special collections, or a digital library like the Internet Archive or Europeana
3. Search the catalog or finding aid first to locate specific items before you arrive
4. Request materials ahead of time for physical archives, as many pull items from off-site storage
5. Take notes or scans, recording the collection and box reference for anything you cite

Tips

• Physical reading rooms often ban pens and require pencils, gloves, or bag storage, so check rules first
• Finding aids are your map; learning to read one saves hours of blind browsing
• If travel isn't possible, a digitized archive collection counts and lets you search full text
