How to complete Tectonic Witness

Getting up close to a volcano, whether peering into a crater, crossing a lava field, or watching steam vent, is a direct encounter with the planet's raw geology. Active ones bring the drama; dormant ones offer easier access and a calmer climb.

1. Pick a volcano with safe public access, such as Vesuvius, Etna, Kilauea, Fuji, or a national-park crater
2. Check the official alert level and any exclusion zones before you go, since conditions change fast
3. Hire a licensed guide for active craters; they know the escape routes and gas hazards
4. Wear sturdy boots and bring water, wind layers, and a mask for ash or sulphur fumes
5. Time your visit for clear weather so the summit isn't buried in cloud

• A sunrise hike beats both the heat and the crowds on popular cones
