Summit Sunrise

Hike through the night to reach a mountain peak or viewpoint exactly at sunrise.

How to complete Summit Sunrise

You climb in darkness so you arrive at the top right as the sun breaks the horizon, trading sleep for a view almost nobody else sees. The timing is the whole point: too early and you freeze waiting, too late and you miss it climbing.

  1. Pick a peak or viewpoint with a known sunrise direction and a trail you can manage in the dark
  2. Look up the exact sunrise time, then count back your hiking pace plus a buffer to set a start time
  3. Pack a headlamp with spare batteries, warm layers, and gloves; pre-dawn summits are far colder than the trailhead
  4. Scout or study the route in daylight first so you are not navigating tricky sections blind
  5. Start moving on schedule and pace steadily so you crest the final stretch just before first light

Tips

  • Add 20 to 30 minutes of buffer; arriving early to watch the glow build beats rushing the last switchbacks
  • Cold and altitude drain phone batteries fast, so keep your headlamp and phone warm in an inside pocket
  • Check the forecast for cloud cover, a clear sky inland often beats a fogged-in coastal peak

What counts as done

You stood at the summit or viewpoint as the sun cleared the horizon, having hiked up in the dark.
