Going below ground into a real cave system, past the lit tourist sections, means crawling, climbing, and moving through total darkness with a guide and a headlamp. It's a rare chance to see formations and spaces that took millennia to form and that most people never reach.

1. Book a guided caving or wild-cave tour rather than a paved show-cave walk
2. Match the tour's difficulty to your fitness; some involve tight squeezes and rope work
3. Wear the provided helmet and headlamp and carry a backup light source
4. Follow the guide's footing instructions exactly and never touch fragile formations
5. Test your comfort with darkness and confined space on a beginner trip first

Tips

• Wear old clothes and grippy boots; you will get muddy
• Skip it if you have a chest cold; some passages need real exertion
• Tell the guide upfront if you're claustrophobic so they pick a route
