Speed Learner

Master a new basic skill from scratch in under 20 hours of practice.

How to complete Speed Learner

The goal is reaching usable competence at a brand-new skill inside 20 focused hours, the threshold popularized by Josh Kaufman. It's less about talent than about ruthlessly stripping a skill to its core and practicing the parts that actually matter.

  1. Choose something concrete and small enough to scope, like playing one song, basic juggling, or a simple conversation in a language.
  2. Deconstruct it into sub-skills and identify the 20 percent of moves that deliver most of the result.
  3. Remove practice barriers in advance: instrument tuned, app installed, distractions off, materials ready.
  4. Practice in focused 30-45 minute blocks and log your hours so you can prove you stayed under 20.
  5. Drill the hardest sub-skill deliberately instead of repeating what you already do well.

Tips

  • Pre-commit to at least the first few hours; most people quit in the frustrating early grind, not the 20-hour mark.
  • Record yourself early to spot mistakes you can't feel.
  • Pick one source to learn from, not ten, to avoid research-as-procrastination.

What counts as done

You can perform the skill end to end at a basic level, with a practice log showing fewer than 20 total hours.
