Paper Map Navigator

Intentionally explore a new city or area without using digital maps or GPS for navigation.

How to complete Paper Map Navigator

Navigating a strange city with only a paper map forces you to actually look at it: street names, landmarks, the angle of the sun, the logic of neighborhoods. GPS gets you there while teaching you nothing; one day without it builds a mental map that sticks for years.

  1. Get a paper map of a city or district you have never explored; tourist offices and hotel lobbies hand them out free.
  2. Before leaving your base, study the map for ten minutes and mark your start point, two or three destinations, and the route between them.
  3. Write your accommodation address on paper, then put your phone in your bag on airplane mode.
  4. Navigate by street signs, landmarks like towers and rivers, and by orienting the map to north as you walk.
  5. When you get lost, and you will, ask a local for directions instead of reaching for the phone.
  6. Keep it up for at least half a day, ending back at your starting point.

Tips

  • Rivers, coastlines, and main boulevards are your anchors; relate everything to them.
  • Getting lost is the point, so leave slack in your schedule and skip this on a day with a train to catch.
  • The phone stays charged and with you for genuine emergencies; the achievement is not using it for navigation.

What counts as done
