Positive Reinforcement
10 pointsmental health & self-care
Reward yourself for completing a difficult task with something that truly makes you happy.
How to complete Positive Reinforcement
Pairing a real reward with a hard task teaches your brain to associate effort with payoff instead of dread, which makes the next hard thing easier to start. The catch is that the reward has to genuinely move you, not be a default treat you'd have grabbed anyway.
- Pick the difficult task first and define exactly what 'done' looks like so you can't move the goalpost
- Choose a reward you actually crave and that you'll otherwise deny yourself, not your everyday habit
- Keep the reward sized to the task: a small win earns a small treat, a brutal one earns something memorable
- Finish the task fully before collecting, then claim the reward the same day so the link stays tight
Tips
- Avoid rewards that undo the work (a junk binge after a hard workout dilutes the win)
- Name the reward out loud before you start so it pulls you through the hard middle
- If nothing material excites you, use time instead: an hour of a guilty-pleasure show or game
What counts as done
You completed a task you'd been avoiding and immediately gave yourself a deliberate, deserved reward that left you actually pleased.
