Ringing in the new year in a foreign capital trades your usual countdown for someone else's traditions, fireworks, and crowds, in a city where you don't live. Capitals throw the biggest public celebrations, so this is about being in the heart of a national party far from home.

1. Choose a foreign capital known for its New Year's Eve scene: London, Sydney, Tokyo, Berlin, Reykjavik, or Edinburgh's Hogmanay
2. Book flights and accommodation early; Dec 31 is peak season and prices and availability tighten fast
3. Research where the main public celebration happens (river fireworks, a central square, or a ticketed event) and stake out a spot hours ahead
4. Stay somewhere walkable or near transit, since taxis and trains are jammed or shut down at midnight

Tips

• Many cities close roads and run reduced transit on NYE, check the schedule so you aren't stranded
• Local customs differ: grapes at midnight in Spain, temple bells in Japan, lean into the tradition you're visiting
• Dress for standing outside for hours in winter; the best fireworks views rarely come with shelter
