Morning Pages

Write three pages of long-form, stream-of-consciousness writing first thing in the morning.

How to complete Morning Pages

Morning pages, popularized by Julia Cameron, mean filling three handwritten pages with whatever is in your head the moment you wake, with no editing, topic, or audience. It dumps mental clutter onto paper so it stops looping in your head, and often shakes loose things you didn't realize you were chewing on.

  1. Keep a notebook and pen by the bed so you can start before the day grabs you
  2. Write three full pages longhand without stopping, correcting, or rereading
  3. When you blank, write 'I have nothing to write' over and over until the next thought arrives
  4. Leave them unread and unjudged, the value is in the dumping, not the document

Tips

  • Longhand beats typing here; it's slower, keeps pace with thought, and resists self-editing
  • Do it first thing, before phone or coffee, while your inner filter is still down
  • Three pages is the target, large handwriting is fine since it's about volume not word count

What counts as done

You filled three pages with continuous stream-of-consciousness writing first thing after waking.
