This means actually swimming in the pool that a waterfall carves at its base, not just photographing the fall from a viewpoint. Standing under the spray and floating in cold, fresh water is the payoff for the hike most people skip.

1. Find a waterfall with a known, swimmable plunge pool by searching trip reports and recent reviews rather than just photos
2. Check the season; many pools are only safe and deep enough after enough rainfall but not during flash-flood conditions
3. Hike or scramble to the base, wearing shoes with grip for wet rock
4. Test the depth and current from the edge before getting in, and stay clear of the area directly under heavy flow
5. Swim, then dry off and change before the cooler walk back

Tips

• Never swim directly beneath a powerful falls; the downward force and submerged rocks are the real danger
• Cold water and slick rocks cause most accidents, so move slowly and don't jump from heights you haven't checked
• Go with at least one other person and tell someone your plan
